Woodworking Hole Hinge In The News

Build Your First Project With Good Wood Plans

Wood plans can be enjoyed by adults and children alike. Wood has a lot of potential, as it can be used to make almost anything and is a renewable, non-polluting resource.  It usually takes special skills and tools to work with metal and plastic. Furthermore, working with plastic and metal often involves making fumes, which should not be breathed. A simple face mask to keep saw dust out of noses and mouths is all that is necessary for woodworking.

If you decide to work with wood, one of the first things you need is wood plans. You may buy these or come up with some of your own. If you are new at this, you should probably buy or find detailed instructions on building your desired projects.  You also might like to start with something simple like a bird house, or a little more ambitious, such as a house for your dog.  You can probably find these plans really cheap or even free. Though more complicated ones will likely cost, keep in mind that somebody had to put a lot of time into creating them and invest a lot of money in trying them out and making sure they work.

Once you know what you are going to do, you need to look at needed tools. Hopefully, the directions will include a list of tools needed. Unless you wish to spend hours with an old fashioned hand saw, the odds are a power saw will be necessary for cutting the lumber. If you are doing a small project or one that requires detailed cutting, then a jig saw is very handy. A power drill with a large drill bit should always go with a jig saw, so you can drill holes where you need to cut sharp corners. These holes allow the jig saw's blade to turn without putting it in a bind.

Hammers are often needed, but not always. Nails tend to split wood, and do not hold as well as screws. So, the power drill should have screw driver attachments to quickly and firmly get screws in the wood. Furthermore, a small bit is handy for pre-drilling a hole. Even if you get self-drilling screws, pre-drilling is a good idea since that further helps prevent wood from splitting, helps you get the screw in straight, and helps you get the screw in just the right place. The bit should be a little thinner than the screws or else the screws will spin in the holes without connecting to the lumber.

Other things you will most likely need include a tape measure, pencils, chalk line, angle iron, level, wood glue, and hardware like screws, nails, maybe hinges and such. A chalk line is a wonderfully simple way to make a straight line across large surfaces, like plywood. The case is full of chalk. You pull out a string coated in chalk. Hook one end at the marked place on one side, hold the base at the other side, and do a quick pull and release in the middle of the tightly stretched string. The chalk comes off to make a neat line from one mark to the next. An angle iron helps you make straight lines over a short distance.

Also your wood plans should tell you how much lumber you will need and if any special skills or equipment are needed. You can shop for used or new materials. Sometimes even used lumber is in good enough shape for more life. It is also good to buy some extra supplies in case you mess up. An old saying among carpenters says that if you measure once, you will have to cut twice, but if you measure twice you will only have to cut once.
